On 4 September 2026 Google begins switching Google Assistant off on Android phones, tablets, Wear OS watches, headphones and Android Auto, and Gemini takes its place. The Google Assistant shutdown matters to UAE businesses for one reason: Android runs 77.86% of mobile devices here, and the thing being retired was a router while the thing replacing it is an answer engine. Ask Assistant for a physiotherapist in Jumeirah and it handed you a list, a map and a set of links to choose from. Ask Gemini and it gives you a recommendation, usually one or two names, in a sentence. The rollout takes a few weeks and there is no way to switch back.
That is a distribution change, not a product update. Roughly three quarters of voice queries carry local intent, and the UAE has 23.0 million active mobile connections against a population of about 11.4 million. Every one of those “hey Google, who does X near me” moments on an Android handset stops being a shortlist you appear on and becomes a single answer you either are or are not. Google Business Profile data, review volume and how clearly your site states what you do now decide which side of that line you land on.
The good news is that nothing here requires new technology. It requires your existing local data to be accurate, complete and machine readable before the rollout reaches your customers’ phones.

What actually happens on 4 September

Google confirmed in late August that Assistant begins disappearing from mobile devices on 4 September 2026. The rollout is staged and could take several weeks to reach every user. Once it reaches a device, Assistant stops working there permanently and there is no toggle to go back.
The scope is wider than most people assume. It covers Android phones and tablets, Wear OS watches, connected headphones and vehicles running Android Auto. Cars with “Google built-in” keep Assistant for now, which is the one meaningful exception. Google TV, Home speakers and smart displays are moving to Gemini on their own schedule.
This has been coming since 2025. Google originally intended to retire Assistant that year, pushed the deadline twice, and spent 2026 closing feature gaps around music playback, timers, lock screen actions and smart home reliability. The 4 September date is the point at which the delay ends.
Assistant was a decade-old command layer. Gemini is a reasoning layer. Businesses optimised for the first one and almost nobody has audited what the second one says about them.
Why the Google Assistant shutdown lands harder in the UAE
The Google Assistant shutdown is a global event with a lopsided local impact. The UAE is one of the most Android-heavy, most mobile-saturated markets on earth, so a change that runs through Android voice reaches a larger share of the population here than it does in the United States or Western Europe.
| Metric | Figure | Why it matters here |
|---|---|---|
| Android share of UAE mobile devices | 77.86% (iOS 22.12%) | Almost four in five handsets are directly affected by the switch. |
| UAE internet penetration | 99.0% (11.3m users) | Effectively the entire adult market is reachable through this channel. |
| Active mobile connections | 23.0m (202% of population) | Most residents carry more than one connected device. |
| Mobile share of UAE web traffic | 75.3% | Discovery is a phone behaviour, not a desktop one. |
| Voice queries with local intent | about 76% | The affected query type is overwhelmingly “find me a business”. |
| Gemini monthly active users | 1 billion (August 2026) | Google’s fastest-growing product ever, now the default on Android. |
Sources for these figures are listed at the end. Read the table as one sentence: the UAE runs its commercial discovery through Android phones, and the voice layer on those phones is being replaced this week.
From router to answer engine: how the query changes
Assistant and Gemini answer the same question in fundamentally different shapes. Assistant was deterministic. It matched an intent, called a service, and handed you a result set. Gemini reasons over sources and produces prose. For a business that means the number of visible slots collapses.
| The query | What Assistant did | What Gemini does | Commercial effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| “Best dentist near me” | Read out a local pack, showed three to five options | Recommends one or two by name with reasoning | Positions four and five stop existing |
| “Is the salon in Al Barsha open now” | Read the opening hours field | Reads hours, then adds context from reviews and posts | Stale or thin profile data becomes visible in the answer |
| “Who can service a Range Rover in Sharjah” | Ran a keyword search, returned links | Matches the specific service to a specific provider | Vague service pages lose to specific ones |
| “Book me a table for four tonight” | Opened an app or a booking page | Attempts the task conversationally end to end | Booking integrations become discovery infrastructure |
Notice the pattern in the last column. Assistant rewarded presence. Gemini rewards specificity. If your website says you are a “leading provider of integrated solutions”, you have given the model nothing to match a query against. If it says you replace Range Rover gearboxes in Industrial Area 13 and quote within four hours, you have.
What Gemini reads before it names a business
Gemini sits inside Google’s ecosystem, which means it does not have to crawl its way to your business the way an independent model does. It reads your Google Business Profile directly and treats it as authoritative: verified name and address, categories, attributes, opening hours, service descriptions, the full review corpus, photos, the Q&A section and recent posts.
Google’s three stated local ranking factors are unchanged: relevance, distance and prominence. What changes is their weighting. In a Maps list, distance does a lot of work because the interface can show you several options at increasing radii. In a conversational answer, the model is committing to a recommendation, so prominence and relevance carry more of the decision. Business Profile signals already account for roughly a third of local pack ranking influence, and that data layer is now feeding the voice answer too.
Review volume is the part most UAE businesses underestimate. Industry analysis of AI-generated local recommendations puts the practical citation threshold at around 150 reviews per location, below which models rarely name a business at all. That figure is an observed pattern rather than a published Google metric, so treat it as a working benchmark, not a law. The direction of travel is not in doubt though: thin review profiles do not get recommended.
The three questions to ask about your own data
- Is it complete? Every category, attribute, service and opening hour filled in, including Ramadan and public holiday hours.
- Is it specific? Service descriptions that name the actual service, the actual area and the actual outcome, in the words a customer would say out loud.
- Is it corroborated? The same name, address, phone number and service list on your site, your profile and every directory that carries you. Contradictions make a model hedge, and a hedging model names someone else.
The gaps Gemini has not closed yet

It would be dishonest to present this as a clean upgrade. Gemini is a probabilistic system replacing a deterministic one, and that trade shows. Reported gaps through 2026 include discontinued or limited media routines, less reliable smart home device control, slower responses from connected apps like Spotify and YouTube Music, and multi-step routines that are hard to reproduce consistently. Google has been working on parity since March and still shipped the shutdown with items outstanding.
Why does that matter commercially? Because friction in the first weeks changes behaviour. When a voice command fails, people either repeat it differently or fall back to typing. Expect a noisy September in your analytics: voice-adjacent branded queries moving around, more long conversational queries, and referral patterns that do not match August. Do not read the first fortnight as a trend.

Five moves before the rollout reaches your customers
The rollout is staged over several weeks, which gives you a short window. None of this is speculative work. All five moves improve conventional local SEO as well, so there is no wasted effort if the transition is slower than Google plans.
1. Audit the Business Profile as if it were your homepage
Fill every field. Primary category exact, secondary categories honest, services itemised with descriptions rather than one-word labels, attributes ticked, photos current, Q&A seeded with the questions your front desk actually gets. If you run several locations, do this per location, not once at brand level.
2. Write service pages in spoken language
Voice queries are longer and more natural than typed ones. Add a short, direct answer near the top of each service page in the phrasing a customer would use, then support it with detail. This is the same discipline that earns citations in AI Overviews and AI Mode, so it pays twice.
3. Make the machine-readable layer match the human one
LocalBusiness and Service schema, consistent name, address and phone number everywhere, and structured opening hours. Our team covers this as part of ongoing SEO and content strategy work, and it is usually the fastest fix on the list.
4. Build review velocity, not just review volume
Recency and steady flow read as prominence. A location with 40 reviews from 2023 looks dormant next to one with 200 reviews and a dozen from last month. Ask at the point of delivery, reply to every review, and mention the service by name in the reply so the corpus itself is descriptive.
5. Set a September baseline before you judge anything
Record how Gemini answers your ten most valuable local queries this week, and again in four weeks. Track Business Profile calls, direction requests and website clicks separately from organic sessions, because an answer that never sends a click still produced a customer. Use the AI performance reporting in Search Console alongside it.
Find out what Gemini says about your business
From 4 September, the voice layer on nearly four in five UAE phones starts naming one business instead of listing five. Rothian Digital audits your Business Profile, structured data and review signals, then rebuilds the content so the answer comes back with your name in it. We will show you exactly where you stand today.
Frequently asked questions
When exactly does the Google Assistant shutdown start?
Google begins removing Google Assistant from Android and Wear OS devices on 4 September 2026. The rollout is staged and may take several weeks to reach every device. Once it reaches a device, Assistant stops working there and cannot be restored.
Which devices are affected?
Android smartphones and tablets, Wear OS watches, connected headphones and vehicles running Android Auto. Cars with “Google built-in” keep Assistant for the time being. Google TV, Google Home speakers and smart displays are moving to Gemini on separate timelines.
Why does the Google Assistant shutdown affect UAE businesses more than most markets?
Android holds 77.86% of the UAE mobile device market against 22.12% for iOS, internet penetration is 99.0%, and mobile accounts for 75.3% of web traffic. A change to the Android voice layer therefore reaches a larger share of the UAE population than it does in most Western markets.
Will my business still appear if Gemini only names one company?
Only if your data supports the match. Gemini reads Google Business Profile as an authoritative source, including categories, service descriptions, reviews, photos, Q&A and posts. Complete, specific and consistent information across your profile, website and directories is what makes a model comfortable naming you rather than a competitor.
How many reviews do I need to be recommended by an AI assistant?
There is no published threshold from Google. Industry analysis of AI local recommendations points to roughly 150 reviews per location as the point where models begin naming a business consistently. Treat it as a working benchmark and focus on steady recent review flow rather than a single target number.
Does Gemini do everything Assistant did?
Not yet. Reported gaps through 2026 include limited or discontinued media routines, less reliable smart home device control, slower responses from connected apps, and multi-step routines that are difficult to reproduce consistently. Google has been closing these since March 2026 and the shutdown proceeds with some still open.
What should a UAE business do first?
Audit the Google Business Profile for every location: categories, itemised services with real descriptions, attributes, current photos, seeded Q&A and accurate holiday hours. Then make the website say the same things in the same words, add LocalBusiness and Service schema, and record how Gemini answers your ten most valuable local queries so you have a baseline.
Is voice search still worth investing in?
Yes, and more so than before. About 76% of voice queries carry local intent, which is precisely the commercial query type. The work that wins voice answers in 2026, structured data, complete profiles, specific service language and strong review signals, is the same work that earns citations in AI Overviews and AI Mode.
The window is measured in weeks
A decade-old command layer is being retired on 4 September and replaced by a model that answers in sentences. On 77.86% of UAE phones, the shortlist becomes a recommendation. Businesses that treat their Business Profile as a directory entry will quietly stop being named. Businesses that treat it as a data product for an AI reader will pick up the queries the others lose.
The rollout is staged, so there is still time to get the data right before it reaches your customers. That is the whole opportunity, and it closes in weeks rather than quarters.
