The AI Max auto-upgrade UAE advertisers were emailed about on 5 August 2026 begins on 1 September, and there is no button that says no. Any Google Search campaign still running the campaign-level broad match setting or legacy automatically created assets will be converted into an AI Max for Search campaign during September, with Google’s query expansion feature, search term matching, turned on by default. Accounts that never used either setting are untouched. Everyone else has a choice that expires: switch the legacy feature off before 1 September, or enable AI Max yourself now so you pick the settings instead of inheriting Google’s defaults.
This matters more than a normal product rename. Search term matching lets Google serve your ads against queries your keywords never authorised, and for the automatically created assets group, text customisation is also on by default, meaning Google may rewrite your headlines. Google says AI Max delivers 7% more conversions or conversion value at a similar CPA or ROAS. Independent practitioner tests have reported far rougher numbers, including one analysis where 99% of AI Max impressions produced no conversions at all. In a UAE digital advertising market worth $2.64 billion and growing 15.2% this year, the gap between those two claims is a budget question, not a technical one.

What Google actually switches on 1 September

On 3 August 2026 Google quietly closed the door. Advertisers could no longer create new campaign-level broad match settings or new legacy automatically created assets in any account. Two days later the emails went out: from 1 September, campaigns still using either feature get converted to AI Max for Search. The migration runs across the month, from 1 to 30 September, rather than landing in a single overnight change.
AI Max is not a new campaign type. It is a bundle of automation features that sits inside a standard Search campaign: search term matching, which finds queries beyond your keyword list; text customisation, which generates headlines and descriptions tuned to the query; and final URL expansion, which sends traffic to whichever page on your site Google judges most relevant. Turning AI Max on means turning some or all of that bundle on.
Dynamic Search Ads campaigns are a separate story. Their forced migration was pushed back to February 2027, with in-account nudges starting this September and reminder emails on 15 January 2027. If you run DSA, you have five more months. If you run broad match at campaign level, you have days.
| Date | What happens |
|---|---|
| 3 August 2026 | New campaign-level broad match and legacy automatically created assets can no longer be created. |
| 5 August 2026 | Google emails affected advertisers confirming the September conversion. |
| 1–30 September 2026 | Automatic migration of broad match and automatically created assets campaigns to AI Max for Search. |
| September 2026 | In-account notices begin encouraging voluntary Dynamic Search Ads upgrades. |
| 15 January 2027 | Reminder notifications sent to advertisers still running legacy Dynamic Search Ads. |
| 1–28 February 2027 | DSA campaigns migrate automatically; creating new DSA ad groups is removed permanently. |
| Around September 2027 | Older Google Ads API versions that support the legacy features reach scheduled sunset. |
The AI Max auto-upgrade UAE accounts inherit by default
There are two groups being migrated, and they do not land in the same place. This is the detail most summaries skip, and it is the one that decides whether your ad copy stays yours.
Campaigns that were using the campaign-level broad match setting arrive with search term matching on, and with text customisation and final URL expansion off. Pinned assets in responsive search ads continue to be respected, which matters if you pin regulatory or licence wording into position one. Campaigns using automatically created assets arrive with both search term matching and text customisation on. That second group gets a genuine expansion of scope: a feature that only generated extra assets now also decides which queries you appear for.
| Setting after upgrade | Campaign-level broad match | Automatically created assets |
|---|---|---|
| Search term matching (query expansion) | On | On |
| Text customisation (Google rewrites copy) | Off | On |
| Final URL expansion | Off | Off |
| Pinned responsive search ad assets | Respected | Respected |
Can you refuse? Only by giving up the legacy feature. Switching off campaign-level broad match or automatically created assets before 1 September keeps the campaign out of the migration. So does turning AI Max on yourself, which is the better option for most accounts, because you configure the toggles deliberately and you choose the week it happens. What you cannot do is keep the old setting and stay where you are. That is why “no real opt-out” is the honest description.
Google says 7%. The field tests say something else.
When AI Max entered beta in May 2025, Google’s headline claim was 14% more conversions. By general availability in April 2026 the published figure had been revised down to 7% more conversions or conversion value at a similar CPA or ROAS, based on internal 2026 measurement and excluding retail. A 50% haircut on your own benchmark before launch is worth noticing.
Independent testing has been harsher. Ezra Sackett at Monks published an August 2025 analysis of roughly 30,000 search terms in which 99% of AI Max impressions produced zero conversions. Search Partner Network placements inside AI Max were measured at 37% lower ROAS. A November 2025 review of retail campaigns found conversions arriving at roughly 35% lower ROAS than traditional match types. None of this proves AI Max cannot work. It does suggest the average result hides an enormous spread, and that the spread is driven by account structure rather than luck.
| Source | Finding | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Google (May 2025, beta) | 14% more conversions | Beta advertisers, internal data |
| Google (April 2026, general availability) | 7% more conversions or conversion value at similar CPA or ROAS | Internal 2026 measurement, excludes retail |
| Ezra Sackett, Monks (August 2025) | 99% of AI Max impressions produced zero conversions | Approximately 30,000 search terms |
| Practitioner analysis (August 2025) | 37% lower ROAS | Search Partner Network placements inside AI Max |
| Retail analysis (November 2025) | Roughly 35% lower ROAS than traditional match types | Retail campaigns |
Two structural traps, both avoidable
The first is budget. Search term matching widens the pool of queries you compete for. If the campaign was already budget-limited, the same money now spreads across a larger and less qualified query set, and average quality falls. Check your budget-limited status before September, not after.
The second is tracking. Final URL expansion can break tracking templates. Google supports four specific lpurl tag patterns, and non-standard constructions risk sending paid traffic to 404 pages. It is off by default for both migrated groups, so leave it off until your templates have been checked against those patterns.
Google has added real controls alongside the automation, and they are worth using. Branded search controls arrived in May 2026 with a three-option toggle governing whether you appear on brand-name queries. AI Brief, launched on 30 April 2026, is a natural-language instruction layer for steering how the automation writes and matches. A text guidelines pilot from September 2025 lets you exclude terms, though it caps the list at 25 words or phrases. Reporting improved too, with a search term match type source column and expanded landing page metrics, so you can at least see what the machine decided.
Why the stakes are higher in the UAE

Google holds 95.35% of UAE search market share. For most Dubai and Abu Dhabi advertisers Google Search is not one channel among several, it is the channel, so a default-on change to how it matches queries reaches almost every paid acquisition programme in the country at once. It also lands on an unusually messy query surface, because the UAE is a bilingual, high-transience market where Arabic and English searches, transliterations and expatriate phrasing all sit side by side.
That gives query expansion far more room to wander than it has in a single-language market. It also collides with where the money actually sits. A large share of UAE search spend runs in categories where a wrong match costs real money on the very first click: real estate, private healthcare, education, legal and financial services, luxury retail. Google deciding that “visa renewal” belongs next to your law firm’s commercial litigation page is not a rounding error, and at a forecast $2.64 billion of national digital ad spend this year, growing 15.2% with a 17.7% compound path through 2029, small percentage leaks are large absolute numbers.
The regulated sectors deserve a specific note. Pinned assets survive the migration, so compliance wording stays in place, but text customisation for the automatically created assets group can generate copy around it. If you operate under DHA, DoH, RERA or Central Bank advertising rules, that combination needs a decision made by a human before 1 September, not discovered in an audit afterwards.
Creative tools built on the same large language models, drawing from the same data pools, tend to produce outputs that drift toward a mean. LinkedIn’s Davang Shah, on why AI-generated advertising is starting to look alike, at Cannes Lions 2026.
Google’s Sean Downey answered the same point by arguing the idea still starts with a human, and that AI supplies versions and speed. Both things are true, and that is precisely the operating instruction: the automation is good at volume, and it is your job to supply the distinctiveness. If you hand it a thin set of assets and no brand guardrails, drift toward the mean is exactly what you get. This is where brand and paid media working from one brief stops being an agency talking point and starts being a performance variable.
The pre-1 September checklist
Five things, in order. None of them take long, and doing them before the migration is far cheaper than reverse-engineering a bad September afterwards.
- Find out if you are affected at all. Filter your Search campaigns for the campaign-level broad match setting and for automatically created assets. If neither appears anywhere in the account, nothing happens to you on 1 September and you can stop here.
- Take a 90-day performance baseline now. Export impressions, clicks, cost, conversions, CPA and ROAS by campaign, plus your full search term report. After migration you will need a pre-change reference that Google’s own comparison view will not give you.
- Decide per campaign, not per account. Migrate voluntarily where the campaign has headroom and broad intent to discover. Switch the legacy feature off where the campaign is budget-limited, tightly targeted, regulated or brand-defensive. Mixed accounts are normal and correct.
- Build your guardrails before the switch, not after. Set branded search controls, write an AI Brief that states what you sell and what you do not, load your negative keyword lists, and use the 25-term text guidelines allowance on the phrases that would genuinely embarrass you.
- Check tracking templates and landing pages. Confirm your
lpurlconstruction matches one of Google’s four supported patterns, and keep final URL expansion off until it does.
One reason to lean in rather than out
At Google Marketing Live on 20 May 2026, Google confirmed that its new AI search ad formats, Conversational Discovery and Highlighted Answers, are only available to AI Max for Search campaigns or to Performance Max with text customisation enabled. Refusing AI Max indefinitely therefore means refusing the ad inventory inside AI-generated results. That is a strategic argument for migrating on your own terms, with your own settings, sooner rather than being migrated at Google’s convenience.
What to watch in the first fortnight after
Do not judge the change on day three. Query expansion needs a learning window, and early volatility is expected. Do watch these five signals daily, and act on pattern rather than on a single bad day.
- New search terms by match source. Use the search term match type source column. If expansion terms are taking spend and converting at a materially worse rate than your keyword terms, negate hard and fast.
- Brand versus non-brand split. A quiet drift of budget onto brand queries can flatter your blended CPA while adding nothing incremental. Branded search controls exist for this.
- Lead quality, not lead count. Query expansion typically raises volume first. Compare qualified leads and sales-accepted leads in your CRM, not just form fills.
- Generated copy, if text customisation is on. Read what Google wrote. If it misdescribes your service, tighten the AI Brief or switch text customisation off.
- Landing page distribution. Even with final URL expansion off, expanded landing page metrics will show which pages absorb the new query mix, and whether those pages are built to convert it.
One more thing worth saying plainly. Every one of those checks assumes conversion tracking you trust. If your Google Ads conversions are still counting page views or unfiltered form submissions, AI Max will optimise enthusiastically toward the wrong outcome, and it will do so faster than a manual account ever could. Fix measurement first. The automation is only as good as the target you give it.
Frequently asked questions
What is the AI Max auto-upgrade and when does it happen?
Google is automatically converting Google Search campaigns that use the campaign-level broad match setting or legacy automatically created assets into AI Max for Search campaigns. The migration runs from 1 to 30 September 2026. Google notified affected advertisers by email on 5 August 2026, and stopped allowing new instances of either legacy setting on 3 August 2026.
Can UAE advertisers opt out of the AI Max auto-upgrade?
Not in the sense of keeping things as they are. The only ways to avoid the automatic conversion are to switch off the legacy feature before 1 September 2026, or to enable AI Max yourself so you control which settings are active and when the change lands. Google is retiring the legacy settings either way.
Which settings are switched on by default after the upgrade?
Campaigns migrated from campaign-level broad match arrive with search term matching on, and with text customisation and final URL expansion off. Campaigns migrated from automatically created assets arrive with both search term matching and text customisation on, and final URL expansion off. Pinned responsive search ad assets remain respected in both cases.
Will my account be affected if I never used broad match or automatically created assets?
No. Google has confirmed that accounts which never enabled the campaign-level broad match setting or automatically created assets see no change on 1 September 2026. Check by filtering your Search campaigns for both settings before assuming you are clear.
Does AI Max actually improve performance?
Google reports 7% more conversions or conversion value at a similar CPA or ROAS, based on internal 2026 measurement excluding retail, revised down from a 14% beta claim in May 2025. Independent practitioner testing has been less favourable, including an August 2025 analysis of about 30,000 search terms in which 99% of AI Max impressions produced no conversions, and a November 2025 retail review reporting roughly 35% lower ROAS than traditional match types. Results depend heavily on budget headroom, conversion tracking quality and guardrail configuration.
What happens to Dynamic Search Ads campaigns?
Dynamic Search Ads are not part of the September 2026 migration. Their automatic upgrade to AI Max was deferred to 1 to 28 February 2027, with in-account notices from September 2026 and reminder emails on 15 January 2027. Creating new DSA ad groups is removed permanently at that point.
Is there a reason to adopt AI Max voluntarily?
Yes. Google confirmed at Google Marketing Live on 20 May 2026 that its new AI search ad formats, Conversational Discovery and Highlighted Answers, require AI Max for Search or Performance Max with text customisation. Adopting AI Max on your own schedule also means you choose the settings and the timing rather than inheriting defaults.
What should a UAE advertiser do first?
Export a 90-day performance baseline and your full search term report, then decide campaign by campaign whether to migrate voluntarily or disable the legacy feature. Set branded search controls, negative keyword lists and an AI Brief before the change, verify conversion tracking measures real business outcomes, and confirm your tracking template matches one of Google’s four supported lpurl patterns.
The bottom line
This is not a story about whether AI in paid media is good or bad. That argument is over, and automation won. It is a story about who sets the defaults. For the next two weeks, UAE advertisers still do. After 1 September, Google does.
The accounts that come out of September ahead will be the ones that treated the migration as a planning exercise: a clean baseline, a campaign-by-campaign decision, guardrails written down, and conversion tracking that measures revenue rather than activity. The accounts that struggle will be the ones that read the email, meant to look at it, and found out in October what changed. It’s a short deadline. It is also a very manageable one.
Want your Google Ads account audited before 1 September?
Rothian Digital’s paid media team can tell you within a day which of your campaigns are in the migration, which should move voluntarily, and which need the legacy setting switched off. You get the baseline export, the guardrail configuration and a conversion tracking check, done before Google decides for you.
