Longer search queries are now the centre of Google’s commercial traffic, and most UAE keyword lists are still built for two-word terms. A Google Ads analysis published by Search Engine Land on 11 September 2026 tracked search term data from January 2025 through August 2026. One and two word queries fell from 42% of impressions to 24%. Three and four word queries rose from 33% to 48% and became the largest segment on the platform. The conversion picture moved with it: three and four word queries went from 20% of conversions to 46%, five and six word queries tripled from 3% to 9%, and queries of seven words or more went from 1% to 4%.

That is not a seasonal wobble. It is nineteen months of one-way traffic, and it lines up with the period when people started talking to search engines instead of typing at them. For UAE brands, where Google handles roughly 95% of search and digital ad spend is on track for US$2.64 billion this year, the practical question is simple. Your keyword lists, your ad copy and your landing pages were written for a search box that no longer exists. This guide covers what changed, what the numbers actually say, and how to rebuild paid search, SEO and AI visibility around long, conversational queries before the next budget cycle.

What changed in Google’s September data

Short keywords did not disappear. They lost the majority. The share of Google Ads impressions going to one and two word queries dropped from 42% in January 2025 to 24% in August 2026, while three and four word queries climbed from 33% to 48% over the same period. The head terms that most media plans are built around now account for about a quarter of what Google serves.

The analysis, by Jason Tabeling for Search Engine Land, is a follow-up to a 2025 study of the same metric. The value is in the trend line rather than any single quarter. Query length has moved in one direction across the whole measurement window, and it moved fastest after Google pushed AI Mode and AI Overviews into mainstream use.

“The way users search has changed for the better, and advertisers who adapt will own the future of search marketing.” Jason Tabeling, Search Engine Land, 11 September 2026

There is a second, quieter finding buried in the conversion data. Short queries are losing volume faster than they are losing conversions, which means the head terms left standing are getting more expensive per unit of outcome while the long tail quietly compounds. If your account is still spending 70% of budget on one and two word terms, you are bidding hardest on the shrinking half of the auction.

Length is not just a formatting detail. It is a proxy for how much intent and context the advertiser is handed before the auction runs. A search for “villa Dubai” tells Google almost nothing. A search for “4 bedroom villa for rent in Dubai Hills with maid’s room” tells it the property type, the location, the specification, the tenure and the budget bracket in one go.

That relationship shows up directly in conversion rates. An NP Digital study of 40 companies running paid search found conversion rate climbing almost linearly with keyword length:

Keyword length Conversion rate Versus one word
1 word 0.17% Baseline
2 words 0.35% 2.1x
3 words 1.02% 6.0x
4 words 1.61% 9.5x
5 words 1.58% 9.3x
6 words 1.94% 11.4x
7 or more words 1.83% 10.8x

Why searches got longer in 2026

Three forces pushed in the same direction, and none of them is reversing.

People learned to prompt

Two years of ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot taught hundreds of millions of people that describing a problem in full gets a better answer than guessing at keywords. That habit does not stay inside the chat window. It follows users straight into the Google search box, and Google AI Mode reaching roughly 75 million daily active users has given it somewhere to land.

Google redesigned the box to invite it

At I/O in May 2026 Google shipped what it called the Intelligent Search box, its biggest change to the search field in 25 years. The box expands as you type, accepts images, files, video and open Chrome tabs alongside text, and carries context from an AI Overview into an AI Mode follow-up. Interfaces shape behaviour. Give people a field that visibly grows, and they write more.

AI Overviews changed what a query has to do

When roughly a quarter of searches return a generated answer, a short query increasingly returns a summary rather than a set of options. Users who want something specific have learned to be specific up front. That is also why zero-click behaviour and query length have risen together: the searches that still produce a click are the detailed ones.

What longer search queries mean for UAE advertisers

The dataset is global Google Ads data, not a UAE panel, so treat the exact percentages as direction rather than a local benchmark. The underlying behaviour, though, is if anything further along here. The UAE has close to 99% internet penetration with about 11.1 million users, 96% of whom reach the web on a mobile phone, and Google takes roughly 95% of search. Salesforce research found 62% of UAE businesses have already created or optimised content for conversational and question-based queries. This is not an early market for long queries. It is one of the readiest.

Three things follow for anyone spending money on search in this market.

Your head terms are getting worse value, not better. UAE digital ad spend is forecast to grow 15.2% to US$2.64 billion in 2026. More money chasing a shrinking pool of short-query impressions is how CPCs climb without volume following. If your reporting shows rising cost per acquisition on your best-known keywords, query length is a likely culprit.

Multilingual queries get longer faster. A market that searches in English, Arabic and a dozen expatriate languages produces more phrasing variants per intent than a monolingual one. Arabic conversational queries in particular tend to run longer than their English equivalents, so exact-match lists built from English head terms miss a large share of real demand.

Local specificity is the long tail. “Business setup Dubai” is a head term. “Cost of a mainland trade licence for a two-person consultancy in Dubai” is a query with a buyer attached. UAE search is unusually rich in this kind of detail because location, free zone, visa status and nationality all change the answer.

Start by measuring the thing, because almost nobody does. Export the search terms report for the last 12 months and add a column counting the words in each query. Then pivot spend, conversions and cost per acquisition by that count. The accounts we audit tend to show the same shape: budget concentrated on one and two word terms, conversions quietly arriving on four and five word ones. That single view usually justifies the whole reallocation on its own.

Stop treating the long tail as an experiment

Long-tail targeting has spent a decade as the thing teams do with leftover budget. The conversion share numbers say it should now be a primary pillar. Move budget away from head terms with flat or worsening returns and into broader, intent-rich coverage, then let bidding find the queries you would never have written down.

Write ad copy in the user’s sentence, not your category

If someone searches a full sentence, an ad headline that says “Villas In Dubai” is answering a different question. Mirror the specification back: the bedroom count, the community, the delivery time, the price band. Responsive search ads give you the slots. Use them for specifics rather than seven variations of your brand promise.

Fix the landing page, or nothing else matters

A six-word query dumped on a generic category page is a wasted click at a premium price. Build pages that answer the query exactly, with the answer above the fold and the qualifying detail right behind it. This is where paid and organic finally stop being separate projects, because the same page does both jobs.

Re-examine your negatives

Negative keyword lists built in 2023 were written to keep short, vague traffic out. Some of them are now blocking long, qualified queries that happen to contain a word you banned. Audit the list against the last quarter of search terms before you add anything new to it.

Rebuilding SEO and GEO content

The organic side of this is the same shift wearing different clothes. Long-tail phrases already account for the large majority of all web searches, and the pages that win them are the ones written as answers rather than as category landing pages stuffed with a head term.

Four moves matter most:

  • Build question-shaped pages. One question, one page, answered in the first 60 words and then supported. That structure also happens to be exactly what AI Overviews and ChatGPT extract from.
  • Mine your own data for the phrasing. Search Console queries, site search logs, sales call notes and WhatsApp enquiries are full of the exact long sentences your buyers use. Nobody else has that list.
  • Make the page machine readable. Clean headings, FAQ schema, tables and plain declarative sentences are what retrieval systems lift. We covered the mechanics in our guide to machine-readable content for UAE brands.
  • Write the Arabic separately. Translating an English long-tail page rarely produces the Arabic phrasing people actually type. Research the Arabic queries natively, then write for them.

There is a bonus here that most teams miss. The same long, specific pages that win organic long-tail traffic are the pages AI assistants cite, and AI citations convert at a far higher rate than an ordinary organic click. One content investment, two channels. Our SEO and content services are built around exactly that overlap.

A 30-day plan for UAE marketing teams

Frequently asked questions

What is the query length shift in Google Ads?

It is the move of Google search volume from short keywords to longer, more conversational phrases. Google Ads data analysed by Search Engine Land in September 2026 shows one and two word queries falling from 42% of impressions in January 2025 to 24% in August 2026, while three and four word queries rose from 33% to 48% and became the largest segment.

Why are longer search queries important for UAE businesses?

Longer search queries carry more intent, and UAE search is unusually detail-heavy because location, free zone, visa status and language all change the answer a buyer needs. With Google handling around 95% of UAE search and digital ad spend forecast to reach US$2.64 billion in 2026, budget concentrated on short head terms is chasing a shrinking share of impressions at rising cost.

Do longer keywords actually convert better?

Yes, and the gap is large. An NP Digital study of 40 companies running paid search found one-word keywords converting at 0.17%, three-word at 1.02%, four-word at 1.61% and six-word at 1.94%. That is roughly an elevenfold difference between the shortest and the best-performing lengths.

What caused searches to get longer in 2026?

Three things at once. People learned to write full prompts from using AI assistants, Google redesigned its search box at I/O 2026 into an expanding multimodal field that invites longer input, and AI Overviews made short queries return summaries rather than options, so users who want something specific ask for it up front.

Should UAE advertisers abandon short keywords entirely?

No. One and two word queries still hold 24% of impressions and 52% of conversions, so they remain a real part of the auction. The change is proportional: they should no longer absorb the majority of budget, and their performance needs testing against long-tail segments rather than being assumed.

How does this affect Arabic-language search campaigns?

Arabic conversational queries tend to run longer than their English equivalents, and translating an English keyword list rarely produces the phrasing people actually type. Research Arabic long-tail queries natively, build separate ad groups and landing pages for them, and do not rely on translated head terms to catch that demand.

How do I measure query length in my own account?

Export the Google Ads search terms report and the Search Console queries report for the last 12 months, add a column counting words per query, then pivot impressions, spend, conversions and cost per acquisition by that count. The comparison between where budget sits and where conversions land is usually enough to justify a reallocation.

Does optimising for longer search queries help AI visibility too?

It does. Pages built to answer one specific question clearly, with structured headings, tables and FAQ schema, are the same pages assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode lift answers from. Long-tail content work and generative engine optimisation are largely the same investment made once.

The short version

Search did not get harder. It got more honest. People are telling Google exactly what they want in a full sentence, and the advertisers who read those sentences back to them are winning the click and the sale. The ones still bidding on two-word abstractions are paying more for a smaller slice of a market that has moved on.

The work is not glamorous: a word-count column, an honest pivot table, a handful of pages rewritten as answers, and a negative keyword list that gets audited instead of inherited. Do it this month and Q4 runs on the right shape of demand. Leave it and the gap widens quarter by quarter, quietly, in the cost per acquisition column.
