AI Mode Ads Now Run on 1 in 3 Google Searches, and Paying Won’t Get UAE Brands Cited

AI Mode ads UAE advertisers now face a hard split. Google’s AI Mode shows a paid text ad on nearly one in three commercial searches, yet in 88% of those cases the advertiser paying for the ad is never cited as a source inside the AI answer itself. That finding comes from a study of 50,032 commercial keywords by SE Ranking, with data collected on 30 June 2026. The ad slot and the citation are now two separate contests, and winning one does nothing for the other.

Here is the short version for anyone spending on search in the UAE. Buying an AI Mode ad puts your brand in a labelled box beside the answer. It does not put you inside the answer, where AI increasingly sends the clicks and the trust. Only 11.53% of advertisers were also cited sources, and just 1.95% saw their exact landing page referenced. So the play is not to pick paid or earned. It is to build both, because AI search now rewards brands that show up in the ad block and in the cited sources at the same time. This guide breaks down the data, the mechanics, and a five-step plan for UAE brands.

AI Mode ads now appear on nearly one in three commercial searches

SE Ranking found a text ad on 29.45% of the 50,032 commercial keywords it tested, close to one in every three searches.

AI Mode is Google’s conversational search surface, the tab where Gemini writes a full answer instead of returning ten blue links. It passed a billion monthly users this year, and Google has started building the commercial layer on top of that scale. At Google Marketing Live 2026 the company confirmed two ad formats inside AI Mode: Conversational Discovery ads, where Gemini builds creative for each query, and Highlighted Answers, which surface a sponsored response near the top of the reply.

SE Ranking’s study put numbers to how far this has spread. Of 50,032 commercial keywords analysed on 30 June 2026, 14,733 returned a text ad. That is 29.45%, close to one in every three commercial searches. Where an ad did appear, 71.1% of the time it was two competing ads shown together, not one. The presence of ads scales sharply with how much a keyword is worth. Cheap keywords rarely trigger an ad, expensive ones almost always do.

Commercial search segment Share of queries showing a text ad
All commercial keywords (50,032 tested) 29.45%
Keywords under $2 cost per click 24.33%
Keywords $2 to $10 cost per click 32.45%
Keywords $10+ cost per click 53.56%
Highest niche (pets) 72.38%
Lowest niche (healthcare) 2.64%

The niche spread matters as much as the headline. Pets triggered ads on 72.38% of queries while healthcare sat at 2.64%. If you sell retail products, home services, travel, or consumer goods, assume the ad block is already there. If you are in a regulated or advice-heavy category, the paid layer is thinner for now, and organic authority carries more of the weight.

This is the finding that should change how UAE marketers plan their budgets. When SE Ranking checked whether advertisers were also cited as sources inside the AI Mode answer, the answer was mostly no. In 88.47% of ad keywords the advertiser’s domain was nowhere in the cited sources. Only 11.53% of advertisers were cited at domain level, and a mere 1.95% had their exact page referenced. The ad and the answer are drawn from two different systems.

The ad slot is a paid-media decision. Being cited is an authority-and-content decision. Neither one moves the other.

The gap goes deeper. For roughly 85% of the ad keywords, the advertiser did not rank organically at all, and only 2.32% ranked at the exact URL level. So most brands buying AI Mode ads have no organic footprint on the same query, which is precisely why the answer above their ad never mentions them. Katerina Fotiadi, Director of Demand Generation at SE Ranking, notes that under the current formats brands often “must lean on the ad settings that hand advertisers the least control,” because Gemini assembles much of the creative and the sourcing itself.

Where AI Mode advertisers actually appear Share of ad keywords
Advertiser domain cited as a source 11.53%
Advertiser domain not cited as a source 88.47%
Advertiser’s exact URL cited 1.95%
Advertiser ranks organically (domain level) 15.35%
Advertiser does not rank organically ~85%

Read together, the two tables describe a closed loop. AI Mode decides what to say from content it trusts, then hangs a paid ad beside its own conclusion. If your brand is not part of what it trusts, you rent visibility next to an answer that quietly recommends someone else. That is a workable position for a fast conversion play. It is a weak one if the goal is to be the brand the AI names when a buyer asks what to choose.

What AI Mode ads mean for UAE advertisers

UAE advertisers who track ad presence and citation presence as two separate metrics can see exactly where they are billed but not cited.

The UAE feels this faster than most markets because it over-indexes on both AI adoption and paid search. UAE digital ad spend is forecast to reach $2.64 billion in 2026, growing 15.2% year on year, according to a market report carried by Yahoo Finance. A large slice of that flows through Google. As AI Mode absorbs more of those commercial queries, the ad you already buy starts appearing inside an answer that may be citing a competitor, or citing no local brand at all.

There is a second reason the citation gap stings here. Many UAE categories, from real estate to clinics to home services, are dominated by a handful of aggregators and international sites that already earn the organic citations. If a Dubai advertiser buys the ad but never appears in the sources, the AI answer keeps sending trust to those incumbents. Closing that gap is not a bidding problem. It is a content, authority, and structured-data problem, and it is exactly the kind of work that has to run alongside the media spend, not after it.

AI Mode ads UAE playbook: five moves to make now

You cannot control how Gemini writes an answer. You can control whether your brand is worth citing and whether your ads are set up to survive an AI-assembled auction. Here are the five moves that matter.

1. Separate the two goals in your reporting

Stop treating “we ran the ad” as “we won the query.” Track ad presence and citation presence as two different metrics. If you appear in the ad block but not the sources, that query is only half won, and it is a brief you can act on.

2. Build the organic authority the answer draws from

Citations go to content AI trusts: clear, well-structured pages with real expertise, current data, and strong signals of who stands behind them. This is generative engine optimisation, or GEO, and it is now the other half of paid search, not a separate department.

3. Add structured data and clean product feeds

Conversational Discovery ads and shopping surfaces lean on machine-readable data. Accurate schema markup, complete product feeds, and consistent business information make you easier to select, both as an ad and as a cited source.

4. Prioritise the queries where ads are unavoidable

The data shows ad presence rising with commercial value: 53.56% on $10+ keywords versus 24.33% on cheap ones. On your highest-value terms, assume an ad will show and a competitor may be cited. Defend those queries with both budget and content, not budget alone.

5. Give up a little control to gain reach, deliberately

AI Mode formats hand more of the creative to Google. That is fine when your inputs are strong. Feed the system clean assets, tight audience signals, and accurate landing pages, then let it place you, while you keep human oversight on brand safety and spend.

Win the ad and the citation, not just one

Rothian Digital runs paid search and generative engine optimisation as one system, so your brand shows up in the AI Mode ad block and in the sources the answer trusts. We audit where you are billed, where you are cited, and where a competitor is winning both, then build the plan to close the gap.

Frequently asked questions

What are AI Mode ads?

AI Mode ads are paid placements inside Google’s AI Mode, the conversational search surface where Gemini writes a full answer. Google confirmed two formats at Google Marketing Live 2026: Conversational Discovery ads, where Gemini builds creative per query, and Highlighted Answers. As of June 2026 a text ad appeared on 29.45% of commercial searches tested.

Does buying an AI Mode ad help my brand get cited by the AI?

No. SE Ranking found that in 88.47% of ad keywords the advertiser’s domain was not among the cited sources, and only 1.95% had their exact URL referenced. The ad slot is a paid-media decision and the citation is an authority-and-content decision. Paying for one does not earn the other.

How common are ads in AI Mode right now?

Across 50,032 commercial keywords studied on 30 June 2026, 29.45% returned a text ad, and 71.1% of those showed two ads together. Presence rises with commercial value: 24.33% on keywords under $2 cost per click, rising to 53.56% on keywords over $10.

Why do AI Mode ads matter for UAE businesses specifically?

The UAE combines high AI adoption with heavy paid-search investment. Digital ad spend is forecast at $2.64 billion in 2026, up 15.2% year on year, and much of it runs through Google. As AI Mode absorbs commercial queries, UAE advertisers risk paying for ads next to answers that cite competitors or no local brand at all.

What is GEO, and how is it different from SEO?

GEO, or generative engine optimisation, is the practice of getting your brand cited inside AI-generated answers such as AI Mode, ChatGPT, and AI Overviews. Traditional SEO targets ranked links, while GEO targets being named as a trusted source. With AI Mode ads not delivering citations, GEO is now how brands earn a place inside the answer.

Should UAE brands stop running search ads because of this?

No. Ads still drive immediate visibility and conversions, especially on high-value queries where they appear more than half the time. The point is to pair the spend with the content and authority work that earns citations, so you appear in the ad block and the sources rather than renting a spot beside a competitor’s answer.

The takeaway is simple. In AI search, paid and earned have stopped being alternatives. AI Mode ads UAE brands rely on will keep growing, but the answer above them is decided by trust you have to build. Run both together and you win the query. Run one and you fund someone else’s.
